There's not much that can be said about Gatsby's American Dream, you either love them or you hate them, they have that polarized sense to them and a unique style that promotes either adoration or contempt. However, on this release (their fourth) it's more than the odd melodies, swift tempo changes, and dizzying song structures layered with creamy pop that make this record stand out, it's the lyrics, and oh do they cut to the core. Songs like "Badd Beat" are a scathing personal testament to their fans, the industry and anyone that would listen about the trials, tribulations, and overall resentment of a band trying to earn their way in a finicky scene glutted with elitist "scene kids," greedy promotors, and fellow bands exhausted by the weight of constant touring and "earning your stripes." As this may be their last release, due to a recent announcement the band may be going on "indefinite hiatus," ensure that you at least give this self titled record an honest listen. Unlike many bands of their own genre, they can at least say that they stand out.
